The old Jones Fall's bridge was removed in the fall before the contractor com- menced work on the new bridge installation. The new concrete abutments and approach walls have been placed behind the old ones and new parapets – protective curbs on the tops of the walls, were set to be poured last week. The Review-Mirror March 30, 2017 – 16 MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) 2016-17 school presenta- tion 'In the Blink of an Eye' was presented to Rideau District High School students at an assembly last Friday. The video is one of a series of dramatizations MADD has created to illustrate the tragic conse- quences of impaired dri- ving. Funding for the videos and presentations by a MADD field representa- tive, comes from the LCBO but the focus isn't just on impairment from alcohol. "I think they 'get' the alcohol. The bigger strug- gle is you can be impaired by drugs as well," said Heather Duncan, one of three MADD field reps which travel the province to bring the MADD mes- sage to schools. Duncan sees a bit of urban rural divide in how teens deal with alcohol and driving. "One thing I hear in more rural areas is that taxis aren't readily avail- able. The planning ahead really comes into play. Kids in urban areas might have a lot of options but don't take advantage of them," she said. Duncan said the video, which presents a dramati- zation of tragedy, followed by real life testimonials is an effective tool to reach the students. "They can see them- selves because of the vari- ety of testimonial. I think they can really relate to it on an emotional level. I don't like to make them sad but it connects to the reality and the people in their life that are important to them," she said. Information about MADD programs, their advocacy and support for victims is available on their website at www.madd.ca.
