Jalani Phillips 89 6-4, 260, So. 2 tackles* Purdue might very well rotate Phillips and Isaac at the end, depending on down and distance. On passing downs, Phillips is the likely candidate, because he' Defensive Tackle 1. Brandon Taylor 55 6-1, 295, Jr. by far, having a season-and-a-half worth of start- ing experience. He'll need to be more consistent, after showing flashes last season. Gilliam is the backup, but he might see time in the middle, as well. s most veteran linebacker, 2. Joe Gilliam 39 6-1, 227, So. Cornerback 1. Ricardo Allen 21 5-9, 186, Jr. 81 tackles, 3 TFL, 3 int., 4 PBU, 1 FF, 1 blk kick* Allen wants to be a more well- rounded player and has worked tirelessly in the offseason to do so. He' Middle Linebacker 1. Joe Gilliam 39 6-1, 227, So. • 7 tackles* Without Beckford, Purdue will try out a few at the position, with Gilliam perhaps getting the first crack. Tuesday, Danny Hope called him the "fourth-best" linebacker during camp. But Higgs or Robinson, a QB convert, will likely see snaps too, perhaps significant ones. 2. Antwon Higgs 5 6-3, 246, Sr.*— OR — Sean Robinson 10 6-3, 240, So. Williams will get an opportunity to play, par- ticularly when the Boilermakers put extra DBs on the field. s one of the Big Ten's best corners. 2. Frankie Williams 6 5-9, 186, R-Fr. Free Safety 1. Taylor Richards 4 5-10, 192, So. 7 tackles, 1 int., 1 PBU* Richards took hold of the start- ing free safety job in the spring and hasn't looked back. Purdue doesn't have the biggest safeties, Richards included, but they're thought to run well. Johnson is a possibility as a backup, as is senior Chris Quinn. 2. E.J. Johnson 7 6-1, 185, So. Strong Safety Defensive End 1. Ryan Russell 99 6-5, 275, So. 33 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1 sack, 3 FR, 3 FF* Speaking of potential, Russell' got it, and now he needs to turn it into production. Purdue had little production at defensive end last season, but with a more experienced Russell, the Boilers seem much better-equipped to regularly get to the QB. Watson' s might be as much a tackle as he is an end. 2. Ryan Watson 92 6-3, 294, Fr. Strongside Linebacker 1. Robert Maci 58 6-4, 249, Sr. (5) • 10 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks, 1 FF* Considering Purdue' at linebacker, Maci might see much more time standing up than he does with a hand in the dirt at defensive end. Coaches have said he' s complete lack of depth fit as a linebacker, and he better be, because there are few other options with experience. 2. Landon Feichter 44 6-0, 189, So. 25 tackles, 1 PBU* Feichter surpassed Charlot late in camp and will likely get the nod vs. EKU. But both will undoubtedly play. Feichter, while undersized, runs fast and has excelled in pursuit drills. But will he be physical enough? Charlot is experienced, having played the last two seasons. 2. Max Charlot 34 6-0, 201, Sr. Cornerback 1. Josh Johnson 28 5-11, 195, Sr. 64 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 2 int., 9 PBU, 1 FF* Johnson' s come on strong of late and with an ankle injury a year ago. He could be poised to have a great year.
