April 7 th , 2017 Dear Members, Unfortunately Mother Nature missed this year's AGM and with it Past President Paul Lawrence's April 6 th prediction for Opening Day. It seems she once again threw us some of her infamous "spring" curve balls. Two March snowstorms along with prolonged sub-freezing temperatures have resulted in a late start to turf growth and have set back the ability to start working on the course. Course opening is a floating date set at the discretion of Superintendent, Dean Baker. As the situation stands right now, we are targeting the third week in April to open the course. I had the opportunity to tour the course last week with Assistant Superintendent Jeff Lockhart and I am pleased to report that the grounds wintered very well with minimal damage to our turf and property. Also, due to mild temperatures and minimal snow accumulation, Dean, Jeff and staff were able to accomplish a significant amount of "inhouse" work around the course over the winter months. Highlights include: Completion of drainage work on 13 th fairway in preparation for enlarging the fairway on the left side along the creek. Significant brush removal on #16 to restore the view of the left side bunkers and creek as well as the back hill on the left side between the fairway and the parking lot. Tree work to improve sunlight on 7 th green, 8 th green and 2 nd tee with additional removals required to address dead and/or declining specimens as well as any perceived safety concerns. As many of us are eagerly waiting to get back on the golf course, others are in the midst of the final stretch of another very successful curling season.
