What a difference a year a makes. Last spring, St. Edward Kindergarten student Tea- gan O'Brien was waiting for what turned out to be a successful kidney trans- plant. Now she and her parents are headed to Dis- ney World, courtesy of the Make A Wish Foundation of Eastern Ontario. Representatives from the organization announced the news in the Kindergarten class at the school Monday. Teagan's parents Jessi- ca Champin and Mike O'Brien were also on hand for the announcement. Staff at the hospital ini- tiated the contact with Make-a-Wish Foundation last year. "They ask the parents if they mind being referred," said Jessica. After that, Make-a- Wish sat down with Tea- gan to see what she might like. "She has been into Doc McStuffins for three years," Jessica of the Dis- ney character – resulting in the trip to Disney in Florida. Teagan received a kid- ney from a live donor last June and everything has been going according to plan since then. "She hasn't had any rejection," Jessica said Monday. She was born 24 weeks into her mother's pregnan- cy and spent her first four months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kingston Gen- eral Hospital. She suffered acute oliguric renal failure in her first few days. Teagan ended up get- ting a kidney from a live donor after the original appeal for help. "She was the second person tested," she said of the donor. She is also from the area and they keep in touch. "She was at Teagan's birthday party," Jessica said. After making the announcement, the Make- A-Wish representatives held a party Monday for Thursday, April 13, 2017 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 126, No. 14 $1 incl. tax Canada Post Contract No. 40021501 St. Edward Kindergarten student Teagan O'Brien doles out goodies to her classmates from the treat bags deliv- ered by the Make A Wish Foundation on Monday. 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 43 Bedford St., Westport 613-273-8848 soho@rideau.net Make-A-Wish Foundation sending young transplant to Disney Mirror The Review Maple Festival marks 50 years this weekend in Delta. Hundreds of people will be heading to Delta this Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the 50th annual Maple Syrup Festival's activities around the vil- lage. This event's anniver- sary milestone brings new pleasures thanks to a $10,000 Ontario 150 grant to promote and enhance the annual festival. New features at this year's event will include an entertainment tent, walking cartoon charac- ters, mini-putt, a magic show and a petting zoo. The constant of the event is an all-day 9:00 to 3:00 feast of pancakes, maple syrup and sausages served at the agricultural hall Saturday and Sunday. Activities are also cen- tered around the Delta Mill Society's Old Stone Mill and Old Town Hall. On Saturday there will be coffee and a bake shop at the Old Town Hall and on both days a gigantic book sale. At the Old Stone Mill there will be black- smithing demonstrations on Saturday and on both Saturday and Sunday a milling demonstration at 1:00 p.m as well as tours of the mill throughout the day The event began in 1967 as a Centennial pro- ject which brought togeth- er tours of local maple producers, tours of the local maple syrup process- ing factory and a pancake meal next door at the Old Town Hall. The event also included visits by groups of school children. That tradition from 50- years ago returns on April 13 when grade 7 and 8 students from Rideau Dis- trict High School and Athens come to Delta for a pancake meal and a tour of the Old Stone Mill. This year the agricul- tural society will be mounting a heritage plaque honoring the festi- val's roots and the volun- teers who initiated what has become a village tra- dition. A full list of times for entertainment is included on the www.deltafair.com website. Entertainers on Satur- day include The Bob Burtch Band, Rynestone Magic and an Elvis Trib- ute. On Sunday there will be Duelling Band Joes from Texas Tuxedo, an Air Castle Maze, Gabriella's Drumming Lessons and Fiddle Earth.
