S I G N & D I G I T A L G R A P H I C S • May 2017 • 17 Epson Listed Among Top 100 Global Innovators Japan-based Seiko Epson Corp. is once again listed among the 2016 Top 100 Global Innovators announced by Philadelphia-based Clarivate Analytics, formerly the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters. This is the sixth consecutive year that Epson has made the list. The Top 100 Global Innovators methodology analyzes patents across four main criteria: volume, success, globalization and influence. Epson has been selected for the list largely in recognition of its success rate, a metric that indicates the ratio of pat- ents granted to the number of applications filed. Epson files about 4,000 patent applications a year. It holds and maintains about 50,000 pat- ents globally and is working with patent agencies in 20 countries or more at any given time. In the patent rankings for the 2015 fiscal year, Epson ranked 7th in Japan for the number of patents awarded, 16th in the United States and 15th in China (among foreign companies). Report Predicts Continued Growth for Digital Signage According to a new report from Swedish global research firm Berg Insight, global shipments of connected digital signage displays grew by nearly 20 percent in 2016, to 10.5 million units. Shipments to North America reached three million units, while shipments to all the European Union nations totaled 2.5 million. The other five million went to the rest of the world. The research firm says it expects global shipments of connected digital signs to grow at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 17 percent in the next five years to reach 22.9 million units sold by 2020. As a result, the number of connected digital signage displays in active use worldwide will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 18 percent, from an estimated 37.6 million last year to 87.2 million in 2021. The report says market growth is being driven by greater demand for dig- ital signage in all markets, technological advancements and a corresponding drop in prices. The report says the digital signage industry is highly frag- mented, with a lot of companies com- peting for business. However, a notice- able trend is the increasing numbers of mergers and acquisitions, it says.
