Like goals, they work best when worded in the present tense: "I am…"; "I feel…"; "I believe…" Affirmations are like exer- cise—you will not see instantaneous results on Day One, but if practiced over time (say, over 21 consecutive days, many studies show), those daily affirma- tions become habits, lifestyle changes, and produce positive results. In order to be effective, your own dec- laration should embody most, if not all, of the following characteristics: • It should be personal—begin the affirmation with I • Positive—the mind cannot hold a picture of a negative • Expressed in the present tense— the time is now • Short—easy to remember, easy to apply • Specific—a specific purpose, a spe- cific course, a specific outcome, and • Emotionally intense—this is nec- essary to break through the clutter, dis- tortion, and distractions that envelope our day-to-day lives. Here are some examples that people have adopted as their own affirmation: • I am calm and composed under pressure • I believe I can turn challenges into opportunities • I see people, not as they are, but what they can be • I am strong, motivated and dedicated to being the best business owner I can be • I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me. Alright, the last one was from Al Franken's fictional character, Stuart Smalley, on Saturday Night Live, but you get the picture. Bottom line: Unless you are willing to step out of your comfort zone—or the one you've allowed society to place you in—and give talking to yourself a real opportunity to work in your life, you may never know the incredible power of self- talk.
