MAY 2017 THE WOLVERINE 13   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FORMER U-M SOFTBALL PLAYER NAMED PITT AD Former Michigan softball player Heather Lyke was named the new athletics director at Pittsburgh, becoming the first female athletics director in school history. She graduated from Michigan in 1992 and had previ- ously been the athletics director at East- ern Michigan since 2013. At Michigan, Lyke earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 1991-92 and was a team captain in 1992. During the 1992 season, Michigan went 37-24 overall and 22-6 in the Big Ten, earning a first-place conference finish in the regular season. In 2016, while Lyke was at Eastern Michigan, the Eagles football team fin- ished with a 7-6 record and went to a bowl game, their first since 1987. CAROL HUTCHINS REACHES 1,500 WINS Michigan's first win in a doubleheader against Kent State March 19 marked career win No. 1,500 for softball coach Carol Hutchins. Already the winningest coach in NCAA his- tory, Hutchins became the first to reach that mark following her team's 3-0 victory. Hutchins is currently in her 33rd season as the head coach of the Michigan softball team, and was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006. In addition to being the all-time softball wins leader, she is the winningest coach in University of Michigan history. She has been named the Big Ten Coach of the year 16 times over the course of her career. MICHIGAN FIFTH IN DIRECTOR'S CUP STANDINGS Michigan currently sits at No. 5 in the Directors' Cup standings behind na- tional leader Stanford, and fellow Big Ten schools Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State. The university currently has 661.25 points following the fall and win- ter sports seasons. Though the Wolverines are more than 300 points behind Stanford, they have opportunities to move up with base- ball, softball and water polo among the teams in the spring season ranked among the national top 25 in their re- spective sports. The Learfield Director's Cup is awarded to the school with the highest points total based on the results of their athletic teams.
