24 • RV PRO • May 2017 rv-pro.com "Normally, after you purchase an RV from a dealer, you sign the papers and it's arranged that in two or three days, you come back to pick up the trailer," he says. "If you come to my store and you say, 'I want to pick it up right now,' I only need two hours." To handle such a feat, Best RV has one employee whose main task is to schedule units through PDI on a daily basis. It's part of a service, according to Ammari, that no other dealer in the state can match. It's also impressive considering he dreamed of owning an RV just 20 years ago, when he was working as a computer programmer. "I decided to purchase one, but since I couldn't afford it, I thought, 'how about if I rent it out to neighbors and friends and make the payments from that?' So, in 1997, I purchased my first RV from Gulfstream and I used to rent it out on the weekends," he says. "At that time, I had to choose whether to sit in front of a screen writing code or go rent RVs. I decide to quit my job in 1997 and started renting the RV from my house." One day not long afterward, Ammari was asked if he wanted to sell the RV, so he did and bought another one. He needed more units so he could take care of more renters, but lacked the cash to buy anything else. "At that moment, I thought, 'OK, I need inventory, but I don't know how to get more inventory, so how about I do consignment?'" he says, recalling visits to storage centers where he'd place flyers asking RV owners to let him rent their units for 50 percent of the profit. "Then, after I started getting some funds and signed up for flooring, the first lines I bought were (Thor models) Tahoe and Wanderer," he says. Like that, Ammari and his brother were selling trailers, as well as renting them and motorhomes. From Humble Beginnings Their first real place of business was a small lot in Man- teca, another Central Valley city some 30 miles north of Tur- lock. Back then, they did everything from sales and detailing to walk-throughs. "When we started, we didn't even have a service bay. We used to work out front in the rain," he says. "It was difficult because some customers will not buy from you even if you give it away because they know there's nobody there to take care of them after the sale." In 2004, they hired detailers and a mechanic. In 2006, a couple of salesmen were added to the fold. By then, the brothers D E A L E R S Best RV has a relatively small but well-stocked parts department offering hitches, satellite receivers and all of the basics, such as sewer kits.
