rv-pro.com May 2017 • RV PRO • 39 writing a column for a local newspaper on mobile homes. It was a question-answer format called 'George Sez'. Every once in a while, someone would send in an RV question and he would send them to me to answer. He began getting more and more RV-related questions and less about mobile homes, so in 1976 he asked me to take over the column. It just made sense to rename it 'Gary Sez'. That's how I got started on writing a column. I realized that there were many little independent magazines out there. This was before the consolidation of the pub- lishing industry and every region had its own 'rag.' I just began contacting all these local papers and asked if they wanted to publish my column. I basically self-syn- dicated the column and it ended up run- ning in 11 different magazines across the country. All the while, I was still working as a technician. A publisher in the Pennsylvania area asked if it would be OK to call my column the 'RV Doctor' in his particular magazine. I was happy to just be selling my column, so I said 'sure'. When consolidation came – Compass Publications bought up all the little news- papers and magazines – they kept the RV Doctor name. Compass was bought by Woodall's and Woodall's was bought by Affinity Group. Affinity Group discon- tinued the publication of regionals. FMCA took up the RV Doctor column around 2000. They changed the name to 'House Calls with the RV Doctor'. I also publish 'RV Doctor's Orders' in RV Open Roads for Lippert. RV PRO: You've worn a lot of hats. But more than that, if I don't know the answer to a ques- tion, I direct the reader to someone who does. I don't guess or pretend I know some- thing – I go to the experts.
