On the 18th of April the prime minister made a unscheduled
statement saying, "We need a general election and we
need one now because we have at this moment a one-off
chance to get this done while the European Union agrees its
negotiating position..."
This comes after her last claim that general elections will be
held in 2020. By pushing elections 3 years early, May hopes
to take advantage of the opinion polls putting her 21 points
clear of Labour.
According to historic data on the UK polling report this is
the highest lead for any party since 2009! The historic lead
will no doubt come as a fresh blow to Jeremy Corbyn and
the Labour Party.
But the Labour leader has said: "I welcome the prime
minister's decision to give British people the chance to vote
for a government that will put the interests of the majority
first."
With campaigning already underway, after the House of
Commons backed Theresa May's call for a early election,
June is looking to be one eventful month.
