50 ISSUE 98 / 2017 INDIE Without a word or warning, Jack White dropped his newest single 'Battle Cry'. The newest single by the once shredding guitarist, and vocalist of the rock band The White Stripes has served two purposes. One of which was to boast Whites talents as an ever prosperous solo artist. But also more poignantly, the booming track will feature as Detroit Tigers' Ian Kinsler's walk-up music. The tune will also be used to soundtrack Whites promotional film War Cry, advertising his co-owned baseball bat company, Warstic. Collectors are warned to keep their eyes peeled, as this new hefty instrumental rock ballad will be released as a limited edition, golden 7 inch vinyl record, on Record Store Day. NEWS: JACK WHITE'S GROWLING NUMBER 'BATTLE CRY' MEETS BASEBALL ALBUM OF THE MONTH: JAY SOM Utterly sublime in its every essence, Jay Som was just in time for spring when she dropped her first full length debut album Everybody Works. For the sheer gift alone that every breathe, pick and key heard on Everybody Works is a complete DIY effort from Melina Duterte's own hands, she deserves our praise for writing, recording, and producing every note and tone on the album. The Oakland star recorded the entire album within just three weeks, all in her bedroom, with such a casual recording style being responsible for the fuzzy vocal effect inherent to 90's nostalgia rock present on each track. The production alone hooks listeners in, trailing a serene path of dramatic lows, sudden drops and reinvigorating snags. There is a smooth weld of lo-fi, grainy rock with sonic folk that shapes the entire album and stretches to all corners of our imaginations. However, this doesn't mean that Everything Works is not diverse. 'Contrast' is at the heart of this album and is what makes it tick. Som's range of sounds exposes listeners to her variety of genres, as from track to track each song holds its own personality. 'BedHead' is filled with jarring guitar undertones and Som's eerie poems about stage fright. Whereas the Californian ease of her hometown seeps throughout 'One More Time, Please'. A track that reeks of funk and dream-like, ethereal tones before plunging into a substantial guitar solo. TRACK OF THE MONTH: THE EARLY COMEBACKS The Californian duo, known for their groove-based, experimental indie rock, have found a dedicated fan-base with their brand of West Coast, sepia-toned rhythms. 'Pass You By' is the latest single from the Early Comeback's upcoming EP Distant Distance. From the offset, Pass You By lulls the listener into a false sense of security. The disarming country-esque guitar and smoothing cello is swiftly interrupted as the drums break into a driving rhythm, comparable to the style of bands like Phoenix. The single also displays surreal lyrical depth, achieving something that is heartfelt but never overly emotive. With lyrics as revealing as, "I hope my messages came through, cos I've been waiting to hear from you", complete with sounds of lush melodies and unvarnished guitar, vocalist Kevin Ty has delicately fashioned an inevitable sense of aching. The Early Comebacks are most certainly a welcome return with 'Pass You By'. Half Moon Bay Joy Ride!
