26 EAST IDAHO HOME & GARDEN 2017 { I N T H E G A R D E N } As new plants emerge in springtime, it is fun to see all the changes in the yard. With a few easy tips, you can take your yard from one season of color to a year-round display that reflects your personal style. For spring, bulbs like tulips, daffodils and hyacinth provide much needed color. Add more color to your spring garden with cold-tolerant pansies and early blooming perennials like Bleeding Heart Dicentra. Shrubs and trees can also provide unique colors with new emerging leaves. Gorgeous spring-blooming trees can really create a statement in the yard. There are many blooming trees that are fragrant and easy to care for. Late spring and summer are all about an abundance of color in the yard. Bright colorful annuals look best planted along the front border of landscapes and in pots or hanging baskets. Planting groups of perennial flowers will give you eye-stopping impact. Select perennials with varied bloom times to ensure there are always colorful blooms. Consult with your local garden cen- ter for more ideas. For fall, tall ornamental grasses and cold tolerant flowers alongside the texture of red, gold and burgundy fall leaves help paint the garden. Bright red leaves of burn- ing bush, fall blooming mums and Sedum are the stars of the autumn garden. In winter, use large stately trees, unique specimens and garden benches or bird- baths to help add interest. Use a window to frame a unique plant that can be seen from indoors. Crabapples or shrubs with berries can be fun for winter and also attract local songbirds. Add evergreen trees and shrubs that keep their green needles all winter to create texture and color. Your yard should reflect your personality and style, no matter which season is here. Consult with your local garden center, local garden clubs or neighbors for more year- round garden ideas.
