GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 5 17 offensive line included a redshirt fresh- man left tackle (Grant Hermanns), a third-year sophomore left guard who started at tackle three times last season (Mike Mendez), a junior center with one year of starting experience (Kirk Barron), a little-used junior right guard (Bearooz Yacoobi) and a fourth-year junior walk-on right tackle coming off ACL surgery (Eric Swingler). There were considerable bumps, es- pecially in the first half of the spring, that made it difficult to evaluate the quarterbacks, and other skill positions. But one thing Brohm rarely did: Give the O-line much help. That was by de- sign. He wanted to see who could block one-on-one and who could hold up in certain situations. So there wasn't of- ten a tight end who stayed on the line to block in passing situations, nor much chipping before running a route nor a running back in the backfield to help pick up the blitz. And, just because the nature of practicing against the same team, there wasn't a lot of cut-blocking either, which also will be a factor in the fall. But by the end of the spring, Brohm said the first-team unit made strides, and he liked their approach. "They have worked hard. I like their attitude. I think they want to improve," Brohm said. "There are no complaints whatsoever (with that). We just have to work hard through it." Building depth is a clear point of em- phasis. There were 11 "sacks" credited to Purdue's defense in the spring game, though there probably could have been a couple more. Nine of those were against the second- and third-team of- fensive lines. That's just one indicator of the struggles those backups had over THE HILL GROUP O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT hillgrp.com We're Illinois' largest mechanical contractor, and we're proud to have 39 outstanding Boilermakers on our HVAC / Plumbing team.
