Bailey developed that desire to be great — and to work for it — at a young age. At uncle Richard McCluskey's urging, Bailey started playing football as a 6-year-old in Dayton, Ohio. McCluskey also was Bailey's coach. When Bailey would make a mistake, McCluskey made him run laps. Bailey ran more than any of his teammates — always more. If Bailey didn't give max- imum effort on a snap, McClus- key would immediately scold him, "You're not supposed to lose a rep!" The more Bailey heard it, the more ingrained it became. Not giving everything wasn't ac- ceptable. Losing, even in a drill in practice, wasn't acceptable. "So he instilled that," Bailey said. "I have this, like, internal … I don't want to look bad. I want to show everyone I can be the best I can be. I don't want to have a bad performance." Bailey still works that way, with that driving force toward perfec- tion. Freeman helped foster it, too, working with Bailey for the first two years, and Holt is pushing it, always wanting more. And a key element in becom- ing the best is understanding the game, whether that's being able to dissect offenses to get any key or having complete knowledge of the defense, not just knowing his as- signments but everyone else's, too.
