GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 5 10 5 Kai Higgins: A J.C. transfer with three years of eligibility, Higgins was better even than Purdue expected during the spring — Jeff Brohm called him a sur- prise — because of his combination of athleticism and size (6-foot-4, 247). By the end of spring, he was a first-team D-end. 4 Richie Worship: The soph- omore might not have the starting running back job, but he'll have a role in the fall. The physical 6-1, 242-pound back isn't afraid to seek out, then try to run over, defenders. 3 Grant Hermanns: The redshirt freshman has made huge strides since arriv- ing on campus as an undersized lineman in the fall. Now listed at 6-7, 293, he could become a big part of Purdue's rebuilt offensive line; he was the No. 1 LT for every important spring snap. 2 Brycen Hopkins: Although the sophomore has moments the inexperience shows — the tight end played only two years in high school — it's hard to ignore the 6-5, 245-pounder's play- making ability. He's a downfield threat up the seams. 1 Markus Bailey: Bailey's only a sophomore, but already he might be Pur- due's best player. The 6-1, 231-pounder linebacker plays instinctually, running to the ball to make plays. There aren't many weaknesses, if any. — Kyle Charters Underclassmen To Build Around Photos by Tom Campbell (Bailey, Hopkins, Hermanns, Worship); Brian Neubert (Higgins) By The Numbers 8 7 15 23 Photos by Stacy Clardie (facility); Gold and Black (Glenn Robinson); Purdue (Ross-Ade, baseball) Days between the football performance complex's scheduled opening, Aug. 24, and the Boilermakers' Sept. 2 opener vs. Louisville in Lucas Oil Stadium. Wins for the baseball team as of April 26, 13 more than the Boiler- makers had all of last season. And their 9-6 conference record was good for fourth place in the Big Ten through late April.
