The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands council is seeking an integrity commissioner to investigate possible code of conduct violations by a member of council. The resolution came after a closed meeting dis- cussion at Monday's coun- cil meeting which was attended by Mayor Joe Baptista, Councillor Liz Huff, Councillor Geri Last, and Councillor Vicki Leakey. The councillor wasn't identified. The resolution directed staff to hire an integrity commissioner through arrangements through the City of Kingston (Janet Leiper) or the Township of Rideau Lakes (Amberly Gavel) both of whom have contracted lawyers for those tasks over the last year. The councilors are seeking a formal investi- gation for related concerns and are seeking advise- ment on recommended penalties. The coming investiga- tion wouldn't be the first time an investigation was undertaken into councilors conduct. The township has had a half dozen complaints since 2012 which were investigated by the Ombudsman between 2010 and last year related to adhering to the Munici- pal Act in relation to advancing council busi- ness outside of a public meeting. Last year the Ombuds- man determined that coun- cil had violated the Munic- ipal Act by discussing council business over email. The deadline for the nomination in the election for a councilor to repre- sent Bastard and Burgess ward is May 31 at 2 p.m. Paula Banks and Rob Dunfield have already submitted their nomina- tion papers. The two had hoped to be part of the current council. Banks ran for councilor and Dunfield ran for mayor in the 2014 election. Banks placed third behind the late Doug Good and Cathy Liv- ingston. Dunfield placed a close second in a three-way race between Mayor Ron Hol- man and Don Wills. Dun- field has indicated an interest in another run for the mayor's chair in 2018. The nomination period opened last Tuesday, April 25 after election dates were set by bylaw at spe- cial council meeting. Electors will be going to the polls on July 8 in an advanced poll or on Elec- tion Day, Friday July 14 at the township office in Chantry. Attendance at the poll will be the only way to cast a ballot. Council decided to go low-cost and low-tech to reduce costs for the unex- pected election which was called to replace the seat left empty after the death of Councillor Good in March. Veselka's scholarship win at the Kiwanis Music Festival last month is the latest musical success the Rideau District High School graduate has had since moving to Ottawa three years ago to study journalism. On Saturday, May 20 at the Portland United Church he'll be looking for support for his Italian studies to help bridge the gap between the $2,000 scholarship and the $7,000 he needs for his trip next month. Veselka's part this sum- mer in Italy will be a lot more challenging than the part of the Captain he played in the high school production of The Sound of Music. He'll be playing the part of Dr. Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore an Italian opera by Gaetano Donizetti and will be tak- ing Italian and diction lessons to prepare for the part.
