L i g h t h o u s e s o f t h e G r e a t L a k e s Fairport Harbor, Ohio 55 GLB | J u n e 2 0 17 greatlakesboating.com The Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light on Lake Erie, located near the end of the west breakwater at the mouth of the Grand River, was fi rst lit in 1925. It replaced the Grand River (Fair- port Harbor) Light, which still stands today and is now a marine museum. The light is automated and closed to the pub- lic. However, it is possible to walk out along the breakwater to view the structure and grounds near the 42-foot lighthouse. In 2006, an effort began by a group of community activists to take ownership of the lighthouse with the goal of pre- serving the facility for future generations. The long-awaited renovations from top to bottom on the classic four-square-style building are currently ongoing. The United States Coast Guard will continue to maintain the light and fog- horn as a navigational aid and the lighthouse will be used as a vacation retreat and summer get- a-way home when the makeover is completed. www.fairportharborwestlighthouse.com n
