Some photographic subjects simply smile. Others may howl, screech, swoop or stampede. A few just like to let off a little steam. In any case, a photographer's intimate knowledge of a specifi c subject can go a long way in infl uencing the results. Photojournalists embrace this idea like gospel. They know that if they can speak the language, learn the customs and immerse themselves in the environment of their subject matter, they're going to bring home the goods. What holds true for human confl icts also holds true for critters. For one week this spring, shutterbugs of all stripes will get the unique opportunity to truly dig in and focus on the nature of their quarry in the heart of Yellowstone Country. The Greater Yellowstone Photography Symposium, set for May 14-20, will feature insights from professional photographers as well as experts in fi elds ranging from geol- ogy to biology and herpetology. Attendees will have the photographic and scientifi c culture of the entire basin at their fi ngertips. Why make all the fuss for just shoot- ing pictures? For workshop founder Christopher Balmer, it's all about setting the scene for success long before your fi nger hits the shutter button. The more you understand your subject, he says, the better you will be prepared to respect your subject. Topics of instruction will include how to look for specifi c behav- iors, seek out the best lighting, planning on the best season, fi nding the best locations and other parameters. Pricing is $447, which also includes raffl e tickets for $2,500-plus in prizes, a photo- submission critique and photo contest entries. The contest will offer cash prizes as well as the grand prize of Photo Adventure Workshop's coveted Iceland Photography Workshop valued at a whopping $4,495. (Additional Grand Prize Tickets will be available for purchase at $25 each during the event.) Visit www.paworkshops.com for more details.
