12 JUNE/JULY 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME For the 12th consecutive year, or since the start of the Academic Progress Report (APR) ratings in 2006, the University of Notre Dame finished first or second in the number of athletic teams that earned perfect 1,000 scores. It was announced this May that 12 Fighting Irish teams earned that top possible grade scored in the annual statistics released by the NCAA, second to Stanford's 14 but ahead of No. 3 Boston College. Also, every one of Notre Dame's athletics programs far exceeded the minimum standard of 930 to be eligible for postseason action. The APR includes both retention at institution and academic eligibility in its calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The 2017 report released by the NCAA features a four-year compila- tion of APR data since the 2012-13 academic year. Four Notre Dame's men's teams — cross country, fencing, soccer and tennis — recorded the perfect 1,000 scores. The women doubled that with eight teams: basketball, cross country, lacrosse, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Ten other Notre Dame teams produced scores of 988 or better: men's ice hockey (997), men's track and field (996), men's lacrosse (995), men's swimming and diving (994), baseball (994), men's golf (993), women's rowing (992), women's soccer (991), women's fencing (990) and women's golf (988). Notre Dame led the Football Bowl Subdivision schools in 1,000 scores in 2016 (with 16), 2015 (with an institutional-record 17), 2013 and 2012 (both with 12), 2009 (with nine), 2008 (with eight, tied with Duke) and 2006 (with 14, tied with Boston College). Notre Dame finished second in number of 1,000 scores in 2017, 2014, 2011, 2010 and 2007. On May 11, Notre Dame and the At- lantic Coast Conference revealed that they had set their football conference matchups through the next 20 years. As a partial football member of the ACC that began with the 2014 season, Notre Dame and the league back then agreed to play approximately five times per year, with home and away dates balanced for three at home one season and three on the road the next. In 2015, the Fighting Irish and ACC set their schedules 10 years ahead from 2016-25, but there were a few snags that led to some compromise. That led to the Irish facing six ACC foes in 2019 and 2023 plus only four in 2022 and 2024 to balance out the deal. Now, 12 more years have been added to the arrangement from 2026-37 — provided there are no more major con- ference shake-ups in college football, or that Notre Dame doesn't join the ACC full time in football by then. The new 12-year pact this time has Notre Dame with a consistent five- game schedule versus the ACC. The 60 total games are divided equally with 30 at home and 30 on the road. Among Notre Dame's 14 ACC op- ponents, those 30 home dates at Notre Dame Stadium will feature two games each against 12 teams and three apiece against Florida State and Miami. Meanwhile, the 30 league road games include two each against a dozen opponents and three apiece at Clemson and Louisville. The 12-year docket also includes two Labor Day Monday night road contests — Aug. 30, 2031, at Clemson and Sept. 1, 2036, at Virginia Tech. (In the 10-year deal from 2016-25, Notre Dame will open on Labor Day on Sept. 2, 2019 at Louisville, and at Florida State on Sept. 6, 2021.) Over those 12 years from 2026-37, there are only two times the Irish won't play one of what might be considered the ACC's "Big Three" of Clemson, Florida State and Miami: 2033 and 2035. Notre Dame-ACC Announce Schedules Through 2037 Since Notre Dame's partial membership in the ACC began, the Irish are 9-6 against conference schools, including a 24-22 loss to Clemson in 2015.
