Smart Irrigation Month is an initiative of the Irrigation Association designed to increase awareness of the value of water use and grow demand for water-saving products, practices and services. Although Smart Irrigation Month is formally celebrated in July, the mission of promoting effi cient irrigation continues all year. Getting involved can be as simple as adding the Smart Irrigation Month logo to your website, ads and newsletters, or highlighting your water-saving products and practices in communication with your clients. Involvement in this initiative can help to build and retain a loyal customer base and position companies as leaders in smart water stewardship. Once again, this year you have the chance to promote Smart Irrigation Month and show that you support water-use effi ciency: ■ Write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper sharing why effi cient water use is important to the industry. ■ Share a colorful infographic on social media with quick facts about improving irrigation effi ciency. ■ Place a logo on websites letting visitors easily know your company supports smart irrigation. ■ Include a note in statements sent to clients with information on how your company is using water-effi cient practices. ■ Support the initiative by working with local governments to obtain offi cial proclamations declaring July as Smart Irrigation Month. ■ Engage local media by issuing press releases about your participation in Smart Irrigation Month. Smart Irrigation Month Extends Beyond July What is another fun way to get involved in Smart Irrigation Month? Now through July, snap a selfi e to show your support for water-use effi ciency. For more than 10 years, many individuals and companies within the irrigation industry have worked hard to bring awareness to their customers about smart irrigation practices through Smart Irrigation Month. The engagement from these efforts has been overwhelmingly positive. Over the years, dozens of government entities have signed proclamations to identify July as Smart Irrigation Month, and the level of global engagement continues to expand year after year. The challenges facing water supplies are a global concern, with peak water demand varying from country to country. Through the power of social media and the Internet, it's now easier than ever to spread the message about the benefi ts of smart irrigation practices all over the world. Watering in the early morning (between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m.) saves money and water, while keeping your grass, plants and trees healthier. Watering early when the sun is low and winds are calm: • Helps reduce water loss from evaporation due to heat and wind. • Improves soil absorption so water and nutrients get to plant roots, where it's needed most. Always follow local watering guidelines and restrictions. When is the best time to water? Established lawns and landscapes typically need less than an inch of water each week in temperate climates. Adjust the timer on your sprinkler system and save up to thousands of gallons of water while keeping grass, plants and trees healthy. • Set your spray sprinklers to run approximately 15 minutes per day with three start times of 5 minutes each. • Set your rotor sprinklers to run approximately 30 minutes per day with three start times of 10 minutes each. • Plan to water every two or three days in warmer months. Increase or decrease the number of days as needed. • Turn your sprinkler system off (or install a rain sensor that does it automatically) when you get enough rain to soak the soil.
