By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Rideau Centennial Ele- mentary School welcomed past teachers and students to their Canada 150 event last Wednesday where they screened a documen- tary on the school's histo- ry. The event also gave visitors an opportunity to visit the school's memory wall which featured a timeline of memorabilia from its history. Around 100 people attended the event. "We felt it was impor- tant to celebrate and honor all the people who had a connection to Rideau Cen- tennial throughout the years," said Principal Dawn Bouchard. The students inter- viewed teachers and stu- dents from the school's past and assembled those interviews into a 50 minute documentary which is available on YouTube. "I was really pleased with the final documen- tary from the aged eight to 11 years old. Their final documentary came out very professionally," said the principal turned super- vising documentary pro- ducer. "They learned so many different skills they wouldn't have had the experience to have learned," she said. The 23 students attend- ing the school will be going to South Crosby Public School next year and the project served as part of a legacy which the last class was leaving to the community. The stu- dents conducted inter- views from students and staff from across the years. "To be quite honest I know more about Rideau Centennial than any other school because of this pro- ject," said Bouchard. On Tuesday Parks Canada could not confirm that a decision had been made to delay the opening of navigation due to high water conditions. Management has delayed a celebration scheduled for Jones Falls this Friday, May 19 to May 26 to mark the open- ing of the navigation sea- son and the return of enhanced interpretation at the site. With the uncertainty Ontario Waterway Cruises had no choice but to can- cel the two cruises they had scheduled for their Kawartha Voyageur from Kingston to Ottawa and a return which they had scheduled from May 20 to June 1. The spring cancella- tions follow the boat's early exit from the canal last year when autumn cruises were cancelled when low water levels, after a summer drought risked the safe passage of such a large boat. Voyageur Captain John Ackert isn't surprised by the vagaries of weather which they've encoun- tered this year. "This high water situa- tion happens about every ten years. That's what you have to expect. The last time was in 2009. Unfor- tunately it could have waited another two years," he said. "In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
