A
summer job led to a lifetime
vocation for Wade Peckham.
The greens superintendent
at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in
Edmonton, Alberta, did not at
first have a career in the golf
industry as a goal.
"I started with a bachelor's
of science degree from the
University of Alberta," he said.
"When I started working on a
golf course as a summer job I
changed my mind. I didn't go
into the field I studied in. I went
into golf instead."
Peckham, 53, is in his seventh
year at Royal Mayfair and 26th
year overall as a superintendent,
all while never leaving
Edmonton.
"I worked my way up from
grounds crew all the way to
superintendent," he said. "I've
been superintendent at four
courses in the Edmonton area. I
worked for single owner, multiple
owners, semi-private, now I'm
at a private facility."
WHY GOLF?
"I think it was initially my
love of playing the game of
golf," Peckham said. "After I
realized I didn't have the talent
to go anywhere, I got on the
golf course as a grounds crew
worker. I like being outside. I'm
an outdoors type of guy."
Royal Mayfair sits in the
middle of Edmonton's North
Saskatchewan River Valley. The
river borders the perimeter
of half of the 18-hole course.
