54 SOD SPOTLIGHT Things have been picking up the last three or four years pretty well." THOMAS TURFGRASS Emory Thomas III started the company in 2001. It represented his second foray into the turf business. Emory launched his first venture that eventually led to several farms in the late 1960s with his father and brothers. That company was sold in 1998. Three years later Thomas Turfgrass was born. "We started out only as an installation business," said Seth, who also serves as company vice president. We would buy turf from other farms and install it. "But we wanted more control over the quality and also grow sand-based sod, which does better on sports fields and golf courses," Seth, 31, said. "We started to get in on the production side again. We pride ourselves on staying flexible and nimble, able to do whatever the customer wants us to do." During peak season, from spring and into fall, the company employs more than 60 people. Thomas Turfgrass
