EDITORS NOTE: 10 • RV PRO • June 2017 rv-pro.com Diesel Success is in the Aire D ata from the RV Industry Association indicates that shipments of towable units are outpacing motorized ones by more than six to one. Meanwhile, within the motorized sector, shipments of Class C motorhomes are outpacing Class A's by nearly 20 percent, and within the Class A segment, gas motorhomes continue to outsell Class A diesel models. With all that said, there's no cause to be down on the diesel pusher segment. Far from it. Notably, Statistical Surveys market data shows the segment recorded solid sales growth in 2014 and 2015. And while sales dipped slightly in 2016, leading market players Tiffin, Thor Motor Coach and REV Recreation are largely bullish on their prospects this year. Be sure to read the feature "Pushing Forward" starting on page 12 to find out why, but just a few hints here: offering models across a wide pricing spectrum, making the most of the diesel chassis platform, and adding even more amenities to these luxury models are expected to play a big part in the RV makers' success. Also, be sure to check out RV PRO's coverage of the recent Newmar Corp. dealer event, where the motorhome manufacturer debuted the New Aire. This 34-foot Class A diesel pusher is smaller than competing models but is big on amenities, including Wi-Fi. Newmar believes it will prove a winner with Millennials as well as traditional buyers who are looking to downsize but still want plenty of creature comforts. That story, "A Breath of New Aire," begins on page 22. Meanwhile, it's also worth remembering Newmar's many successes in the Class A market, a segment the 50-year-old company has a long track record in and has focused on exclusively since 2012. Be sure to check out that story, "Legacy & Leadership" starting on page 28. Finally, be sure to read "Home of the Brave" starting on page 38 to find out how Lichtsinn RV in Iowa is prospering by narrowing its focus to exclusively retail new Winnebago motorhomes. In a time when "diversification" is a business buzzword, it's worth noting that some dealerships like Lichtsinn continue to do quite well by focusing on the motorized market and by retailing one RV maker exclusively. In summary, it's an exciting time for the motorhome market, and for diesel pushers in particular, and we're happy to be highlighting the many positive developments in this month's issue. As always, thanks for reading. Bradley Worrell Editor brad@nbm.com P.O.
