The dashboard also provides users with information on how much gas is in the tank, translating it to how many hours the generator can continue to operate given its current load. "That's a big piece of feedback," says Moose. "You know how much time you have left, so you can decide whether you can run the air-conditioner overnight without having to go out and check it at 2 in the morning." Honda's Pernice agrees that the inverter generators can be incredibly efficient. For instance, he says his com- pany's model 2000 can run up to nine hours on one gallon of gas. And, thanks to efficiencies in technology, the inverter generators also are lighter weight. " When we introduced our old EX-1000, which was a very popular small generator, it weighed 56 pounds," says Per- nice. "Our new EU-2000 model has twice the power, and it only weighs 46 pounds. That's innovation in the marketplace." Still another option some inverter generators offer is their ability to be wired in parallel, such as Powerhouse's new PH2400 Pi model. "The P stands for parallel ready, which means you could connect two of those units together and output 4,400 watts combined," Godino says. "That gives people some flexibility if they don't want to carry around a very large unit but sometimes need that additional output." All About the Air While having the ability to charge cellphones and laptops is nice, when push comes to shove, generator power is often more about serving another appli- ance that can be a real energy hog – the air conditioner. Yamaha's Sheehan, for instance, notes it's not uncommon for larger RVs to have two or even three units. "That's why we make units as small as 1,000 watts all the way up to a 6,300-watt dual-voltage inverter model," he says. "With a larger rig that might be pulling power off a 240-volt outlet, this is where the dual voltage comes into play. They need not just 120- volt, but also 240-volt capability."
