{ CABINETS } Setting the Stage for Got a lot of stuff? Rejoice— there’s a cabinet style just for you n by Nichole Schell-MacDowell When you think of cabinets, it’s usu- ally the kitchen that comes to mind. But cabinets are useful anywhere you need storage—the bathroom, the garage, a home library—and cabinetry also offers additional options such as display cabinets, entertainment centers, and bar and wine cabinets. If you’re searching for new cabinetry, you’ll find that there are four main types of cabinets: ready-to-assemble (RTA), stock, semi-custom and custom. RTA cabinets can be put up and then taken down when no longer needed. One 46 | EAST IDAHO HOME & GARDEN 2010 concern is that RTA cabinets must be fitted together properly, otherwise they can split or separate. Options in designs and styles are limited with these types of cabinets as well. Stock cabinets are made in bulk ad there- fore available at competitive prices. They are usually available ready to install. Stock cabinets do not have the structural or archi- tectural options of custom-designed cabi- nets. Since stock cabinets are constructed before the customer even orders them, they are only available in specific sizes and dimensions. Semi-custom cabinets are constructed after you place the order selecting one of Storage the designs. They offer greater freedom in size, shape and modification. Semi-custom cabinets are available in a wide range of styles, materials and colors. You can also get extra accessories such as additional drawers and holders. Custom cabinets offer the opportunity to choose the architecture, material, size, style and design. Custom-built cabinets are usually made by a local cabinet maker. The construction and finishing are of high qual- ity and they are expected to last longer than other types of cabinets. You can specify the required number of drawers and chests, and the price depends on the style and design. You can also have the décor and style of your home reflected in the cabinets. Owner Kent Van Orden says that while there is a difference in price with each type of cabinet, custom cabinets are very competitive with box pric- es, especially here in southeastern Idaho. Van Orden says that cabinet accessories are very popular right now, such as built-in garbage drawers, adjustable shelving and spice racks hidden behind decorative posts. “We include these types of extras in nearly every new home we build. They are so com- mon and available that people expect it now,” says Van Orden. He says that custom-
