The South Crosby Pub- lic School (SCPS) com- munity is rallying around a project to create a play- ground shade shelter and buddy bench area to remember former student Parker Simpson. The vision for the quiet corner, Park it with Parker, also includes flowers and shrubs and will have a theme of something near and dear to Parker's heart, Star Wars. He was diagnosed with Anterior Mediastinal T- Lymphoblastic Lym- phoma in January 2016. He underwent surgery and received chemotherapy treatments at Kingston General Hospital. Just when his family thought Parker was in the clear, they were given the news that the cancer had returned aggressively. Parker was quickly trans- ported to Sick Kids in Toronto to undergo treat- ment. After treatment was not successful the family returned home where Parker passed away on Feb. 8, 2017. "I think this memorial is a way for all of us to heal a little bit. We hadn't experienced a loss like that. It will be a way to remember what a wonder- ful little man he was," said SCPS principal Monique Antoine Hartley who developed a deeper appre- ciation of her staff. "I'm so fortunate to work with this group of people. Even though they were hurting, they went the extra mile to make sure the kids were okay know- ing it was okay to be sad. "It shows the reliance not only of the school but the community at large. High water levels and flows caused by extreme amounts of precipitation have resulted in unsafe boating conditions across both waterways. For safety reasons, Parks Canada has delayed the start of the 2017 navi- gation season for the Rideau Canal and the Trent Severn Waterway. The Rideau Canal and the Trent Severn Water- way have been closed to all boat traffic and all forms of water-based activities have been dis- couraged. This closure most importantly protect boater safety, and will help to prevent further shoreline erosion and property dam- age experienced by local residents and businesses. Parks Canada will con- tinue to make adjustments to water flows in order to restore safe conditions in preparation for the naviga- tion season. High water delays Canal opening The Village of Westport is hosting a walk-a-thon – A Walk in the Park – and health fair this Saturday to raise funds for Lockwood Park and unveil the improvements to the prop- erty so far. "It is an official unveil- ing of the walking path, said Councillor Frank Huth who has been spear- heading fundraising efforts for a five-year plan. The Lockwood Foun- dation has pledged up to $25,000 a year for four years. The first year was a full donation, with the last three years – 2016-2018 – based on matching funds raised locally. The walk runs from 2 to 4 p.m., preceded by a walk at 1:30 p.m. for those who need extra time. The event is to raise funds for the next phase for the park – a children's natural playground and other improvements including replacing the grass around the infield with stone dust. There will also be a health fair during the walk with interactive and edu- cational events for all ages. There will also be live music with Shawn McCul- lough. Prizes and draws include a pair of tickets to see the Toronto Blue Jays. If it rains, the walk will be held inside the arena. Pledge sheets are still available at Town Hall, Westport Library, Kudrinko's or by calling Huth at 613-273-9041.
