Lyndhurst's St Luke's Thrift Shop has a new home this summer and fall in the church hall across from its old home in the parish centre. After the church's spring rummage sale at the beginning of May items were sorted for the rebirth of the hall as a thrift store. The hall has traditional- ly been a busy spot each summer when it has served as the dining hall of Camp Hyanto, the dio- cese's summer youth camp which is not operating this summer. The Thrift Shop has become a go-to place in the community for local residents who have a need for used items but in the summer receives interest from people outside of the community. "There's not so much drive-by traffic in the win- ter. In the summer time we get quite a few people come from Brockville and Ottawa," said volunteer Donna Robinson Money raised from the thrift store has been split between the parish and Camp Hyanto "What we are doing this year is we are going to decide two or three times where the funds will go. The congregation is mak- ing recommendations to the parish council. Half is going to other charitable organizations," she said. The hall is on the east side of Cty. Rd. 33 at the north end of the village. Summer hours are Wednesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Satur- day 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. A well loved Broadway musical comes to Westport this weekend when Rideau District High School stu- dents present Stephen Sondheim's 'Into the Woods' at the Lions Beach house. The group will be pre- senting a 2 p.m. perfor- mance of the one and a half hour musical this Saturday and Sunday. They will be accepting a free will dona- tion as admission. The school has to pay $1000 for performance rights for the musical which is short on dialogue but big on music. Corgand Janeway- Svendsen is co-directing the play with teacher Leanne Schachow. "We have wonderful voices singing all of the parts," said Janeway- Svendsen who saw the play which he describes as a 'big musical' many times at the Thousand Islands Play- house where he was an usher. The group, which includes many veterans of RDHS productions began rehearsing in the winter term after school and will be getting a course credit for their participation. The production cleverly melds together the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales of "Lit- tle Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Jack and the Beanstalk", and "Rapunzel with a theme of be careful what you wish for. A narra- tor helps the audience deci- pher the story. Moving the play outside to the Westport Lions beach is a departure for the group. "We wanted to perform somewhere outside to feel the woods," said Janeway- Svendsen. This weekend's event won't be the only opportu- nity to see the performance which will be part of the school's arts night June 15 and a June 3 performance. •Continued from page 1 It's a wonderful com- munity," she said. The principal hopes her wonderful community will be supportive next week of the school's latest fundraising effort for the Park it with Parker project, a family carnival. The event takes place Thursday June 1 at the school from 5 to 7:30 p.m., an evening preced- ing a PA day. Events include face painting, a lollipop tree, a cake walk, a balloon clown, horse wagon rides, bean bag toss, bake sale, petting zoo, silent auction, raffle table fish pond, a bouncy castle and many other activities. The school's fundrais- ing has accumulated around $8,000 for the esti- mated $20,000 project. Donations to the school board for the project can receive a tax receipt. "Our parent council has been very helpful with fundraising," said Antoine-Hartley who is reaching out beyond the Elgin Seeley's Bay area. "We're hoping to tap into not just our own fam- ilies. We'd like to invite the whole community to come out and raise a little money for Park it with Parker," she said.
