42 THE SHOP JULY 2017 A s business owners, we love to read about ways to help our shops. But, we are no good to our company or our employees if we are ready to drop, or miserable due to poor health. When we think of automotive occupa- tional health issues, things like toxic chemi- cals and compounds, impact traumas and repetitive motion injuries come to mind. We in the automotive and motorcycle world are a tough bunch. We work long hours and if we happen to slice open a hand, well, just slap a piece of masking tape on it and go right back to what you were doing. Everyone has their story of the toughest injury they ever worked through. And, sadly, we treat non-physical problems like stress the same way. We don't have time to deal with it right now. The clock is ticking and the day is flying by. That is, until that pain in your chest is getting scary or the lump on your side keeps growing, or you faint on the shop floor or paint a car with improperly mixed paint. The Silent Epidemic By JoAnn Bortles 42 THE SHOP JULY 2017 Your shop, your stress—and your health. Stress raises our blood pressure and the combined impacts of increased blood pressure, faster heart rate, and higher fats and sugar in your blood can contribute to several health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.
