The large, fashionable fans could cover the ladies faces and, just like the glove, had a language of its own. A wide, open fan, meant wait for me; fanning slowly meant you were married; letting the fan rest on the left cheek meant no; resting it on the right cheek meant yes, to name just a few of the things the fan could say.
