18 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW MICHIGAN FOOTBALL Michigan Regains Lead In All-Time Winning Percentage Michigan and Notre Dame headed in opposite directions during the 2016 campaign. The Wolverines continued to ascend under Jim Harbaugh, posting its second-straight 10-3 mark, while the Irish sputtered to a 4-8 record to put Brian Kelly squarely on the hot seat. However, there were other implications from last season's results, which included U-M nudging back ahead of Notre Dame in the race for the Football Bowl Subdivision's best all-time winning percentage. The Maize and Blue enter the fall .00191 ahead of the Golden Domers in winning percentage — taking the top spot for the first time since the 2013 season — and have stretched their lead in overall victories to 39 more than the Irish. The 8-1 mark last fall meant that the Buckeyes have won more than 72.5 percent of their Big Ten games in 104 years with the league. Michigan is the only other school with greater than a 64 percent success rate in Big Ten play, following a 7-2 conference record last fall to make it 498-202-18, the overall win total standing as the greatest in league history. However, OSU now trails U-M by just two victories in that category. Surprisingly, no Big Ten team's 1-14 standing, in terms of all-time confer- ence winning percentage, changed from last year — although Penn State is quickly creeping up on Nebraska for No. 3, and just .04144 percentage points separate No. 6 Wisconsin from No. 10 Illinois.
