90 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW OFFENSIVE LINE 90 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW OFFENSIVE LINE PLAYER BIOS POSITION COACH Tim Drevno, in his third season with the Wol- verines, is entering his 26th year as a football coach. He is Michi- gan's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Previously, Drevno worked with head coach Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego (2003-06) and Stanford (2007-10), and with the San Francisco 49ers (2011- 13). At the end of the 2016 season, the Michigan of- fense had scored 524 points — the fifth-highest season total in program history — and the team led the Big Ten for the second straight season and was No. 11 in the NCAA for points per game (40.3). The offensive line helped four different backs rush for at least 400 yards and the offense averaged 4.8 yards per carry while giving up less than two sacks per game. In the 2015 season, U-M ranked in the top 25 na- tionally in five offensive categories: red-zone offense (seventh), third-down conversions (17th), fewest fumbles lost (21st), fewest tackles for loss allowed (24th) and fewest turnovers lost (25th). Drevno, who directed the offensive line and run game at USC in 2014 prior to coming to Ann Arbor, served as the offensive line coach under Harbaugh for the 49ers, who won two NFC West titles dur- ing his time there. San Francisco played in the NFC Championship Game each of his three seasons and participated in Super Bowl XLVII. He coached a pair of Pro Bowl players in 2013 and all five of his offen- sive linemen were selected to the Pro Bowl in 2012. At Stanford, Drevno coached tight ends for the first two seasons and then the offensive line for two years. The Cardinal offensive line was second in the nation for fewest sacks allowed in back-to-back seasons and helped pave the way for a ground game that set the school rushing yardage mark in 2009. Drevno was Harbaugh's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at San Diego when the Toreros won the Pioneer League title in consecutive seasons (2005-06) and earned NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major national championships both years. The former Cal State Fullerton offensive lineman has also coached at his alma mater, Montana State, UNLV, San Jose State and Idaho. Greg Frey, in his first season back with the Wolverines, returns to the team following six seasons at Indiana. This time around, Frey will concentrate on tackles and tight ends while also shouldering run game coordinator duties. He previously served as U-M's offensive line coach from 2008-10. At IU, Frey began as the offensive line coach in 2011 before moving up to run game coordinator from 2012-13 and co-offensive coordinator from 2014-15. In 2016, he was named assistant head coach. More than 20 athletes coached directly by Frey have made it to the NFL, including Michigan linemen David Molk, Taylor Lewan and Michael Schofield. In 2014, Lewan was named the Big Ten's Offensive Lineman of the Year before being selected by the Tennessee Titans 11th overall in the NFL Draft, and Molk won the Rimington Award for the country's best center. In 2010, while at Michigan, Frey was a part of the offensive staff that oversaw a school- record 6,353 offensive yards. Frey began his coaching career at South Florida as a graduate assistant in 1996, the first year the team existed. In 1999, Frey began full-time as the defen- sive line coach and then served as the offensive line coach from 2000-06. As a player, Frey was a member of the Florida State football team from 1992-95, winning four straight ACC championships, one national champi- onship (1992) and three straight Orange Bowls in the three years following the national title.
