A new television pilot is bringing a fictional Westport-like communi- ty to life in Gentle Bend a story of a small town's native son returning as a 30-something. Ottawa-based director Norman Berketa and his team were in Westport at the end of last month completing outside shots for the new program which will be getting shopped to networks in the coming months. Berketa is looking for- ward to a good three or four months of editing, writing some incidental music, and then to begin- ning to pitch the program to networks by the end of the year. The 15- member cast is a departure for him after writing and produc- ing small shorts. His daughter Hayley has been part of Berke- ta's team as a production assistant and also had a small part in the produc- tion. "We've only worked together once before. This was our first big project together," "It's a redemption story. The basis of the story came from my own life," said Berketa. He and his writing partner Allison Graham chose Westport as the setting of their project when they began the pro- ject ten years ago and have had a terrific wel- come during the project. "It's like it was meant to be," said Berketa. The event raised around $10,000 to help the family with the expenses associated with a ten- week hospital stay this spring and her recovery at home since May 12 to get well enough to get on a heart transplant list. Life took a 180 degree turn in March when the 19 year's olds s heart, which she had received when she was two and a half, went into heart failure. Adrianna spent six weeks in the ICU of the Ottawa Heart Institute and benefitted from the latest technology to keep her heart going. "It saved the left side of her heart. She's in right side heart failure. The heart is just getting tired," said Adrianna's mum, Arlene (Hutchings) Foster. Adrianna had been studying at college. She is grateful for the support of the community which came out in force to the church on Friday to perform and support the fundraising efforts which included a silent auction and a live auction of pies and tarts.
