Township of Rideau Lakes Council will soon be discussing where to continue hard surfacing roads in the township. "The objective took us to 70 per cent hard sur- faced during the life of the plan. We're at 59 cent," said Mayor Ron Holman. When the plan was introduced 20 per cent were hard surfaced, most- ly in South Elmsley. "A lot of our roads that were formerly mostly sea- sonal roads have more permanent residents. There's a higher expecta- tion of service for that rea- son," he said. Some of the first roads which surface treated did- n't have adequate prepara- tion in their rebuilding. "Ones we did early we didn't put enough base on. Any roads we are building now from scratch are last- ing," said Holman. A map of potential roads up for hard surfac- ing includes Little Crosby, Parish, and Noonan Roads as well as the eastern end of McAndrews Road. Proposed roads for the south include Marina, Battams, DeLong, Glover, Mallen, Franks, Coons, Lockwood Lane, Portland, Fairview, Lockwood Lane and Freeland. To the east they include the Delta, Chantry, Hanna, Washburn Roads and Lake Street. This year single surface treatments have included parts of Porter Rd., 9th Concession, Thousand Acre Road and Cedar Val- ley Road. Double surface treatments will be com- pleted on sections of Cros- by, Garrett, Short Point and Bacchus Island Roads. Herbicide sprayers were in Lanark, Leeds and Frontenac counties last week spraying to elimi- nate the further prolifera- tion of Wild Parsnip. Exposure of skin of both plants' sap and then exposure to sunlight can cause extreme discomfort, scarring and even blind- ness. Spraying for the plant in Rideau Lakes will be on County Roads only after council eliminated the proposed $30,000 pro- gram for township roads. County Roads within the township were sprayed last week and not far away on Cty Road 10 in Lanark contractors were complet- ing those roads too. Last week South Fron- tenac sprayed parts West- port Road near Conc. 12. "Everything seems to be a bit behind. Hopefully it will be a slow summer. I think the spraying and the spot spraying in the bad areas has been paying off," Leed Grenville Weed Inspector Larry Sudds said. He said the province has also started to take responsibility for their roadsides and would be implementing a spray pro- gram this summer.
