With delivery being as critical as it is, I would make the analysis of this metric an on-going practice and put it on the company's "dashboard." You don't want a good delivery record to start to slip and go undetected. If you discover your problem is with your package delivery company, contact it and share the results of your analysis. The major companies—such as UPS, Federal Express and even the US Postal Service— have customer service departments and account managers that can help fashion a solution to your dilemma. Unless they know you are monitoring their perfor- mance and hear from you, though, they delivered on time or it's free—just like Domino's Pizza founder and multi-mil- lionaire Tom Monaghan did. If I recall, he built Domino's from a one-location Detroit pizzeria in 1960 into a giant corporation—that he sold for $1 billion in 1999—on that one little promise; a promise none of his competitors would even think of making. Good luck and happy delivering! SDG usually think they are satisfying your needs. Become their squeaky wheel and allow them to apply the grease. If you've read this column to this point, you have already taken the first step to becoming a world-class supplier in your customers' eyes. Being aware of the importance of delivering on time every time, and practicing the art of under-promise and over-deliver are half the battle.
