20 FASHION www.guestlist.net Issue 33 / MAY 2012 DESIGNER OF H&M EXTRAVAGANZA! Anna dello Russo, declared fashionista and editor for Vogue magazine's Japanese edition has designed an accessories collection for H&M. Owner of 4,000 pairs of shoes dello Russo is an icon and has her own philosophy regarding fashion with statements like "fashion is always uncomfortable" and "between fashion and style, always choose fashion". As a result of this partnership we got a collection of extravagant designs including: jewelry, sunglasses, shoes, purses and suitcases. Turquoise and gold are the predominant colours and animals are also very present in this new collection which will be in stores 4th October. FRED BUTLER Has Designing always been your dream? Yes! Since I was seven when I start- ed to do fashion designs and made my granddad's shed into a studio with pages of my mum's magazines stuck on the wall! It sounds like growing up was a little trying for you when it came to expressing yourself, how was it growing up in Colchester? I think anywhere outside of London is difficult for "freaks" in their forma- tive years experimenting with their identity. Colchester is an army base so nights out were always fraught with negative attention because I was a walking target for verbal abuse. I've always worn clothes for my own enjoyment and not as a conscious effort to send any sarto- rial message so it was an education in society's reactions to style. How does it feel now to design things so alternative, and to have them so exalted? It's my dream come true, espe- cially making pieces for musicians because that imagery is the stuff that really excited me when I was a teenager – those moments become iconic and to be part of that visual is magic! Do you see your pieces as a state- ment you are making? I love creating a strong narrative, atmosphere and infectious uplifting mood with my collections and fash- ion film. I consider every element to encapsulate that from the set de- sign, sound design, nail design etc. What is the best advice you can give to someone struggling to ex- press themselves? Just be true to yourself and cre- ate things that excite you and that will be the purest essence of your signature, to entice attention and a following. Look deep inside your mind's eye and shut out all exterior sources that might distract or infect it. How much do you think about your pieces in relation to the hu- man body when you are designing them? Fitting a structure to ergonomically harmonise with the body is the key factor in determining a final design. I start by taking an origami technique and working around a mannequin until I find the winning formula. You have designed bespoke piec- es for some of the most outgoing stars in the music industry, when you design your collection, who is it designed for, who would you say you had in mind?
