Issue 43 / 2012 INDIE ALBUM OF THE MONTH: The xx INDIE / ROCK 41 www.guestlist.net GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS MEG MYERS 7 Mercury Prize 2010 Winners return with their second album Coexist The xx were only around for two years before the indie-pop band's album xx had grown into a universally bestseller. acclaimed The trio are now releasing a follow up album which has the potential to mirror their prior success. Coexist is a continuation xx; it is composed of the familiar sombre, yet beautiful tones weaved together with fragile vocals. The lead single 'Angels' is a very minimalistic piece which conveys the fears and doubts when being in love. 'Chained', the second single, is carried away by a pulsing bassline and depicts the sense of dread as a couple drifts apart. Coexist is the return of the simple greatness of xx. More whispers, more melancholic guitar with plenty of gain; and more basic, yet catchy drum-beats. Coexist is available to stream online at: http://thexx.info/ and is available for purchase on 10th September. riffs THE ROLLING STONES TO RELEASE NEW DOCUMENTARY Jehovah's Witness with a talent transforms into a badass! Everyone has experienced it at some point in their lives, that feeling of unrelenting op- pression from the tyrants we refer to as 'Mum' and 'Dad'. Many rebel and turn to the expressive outlet of music. Meg Myers did exactly this and music led her away from the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee to the city of the famous and talented, Los An- geles. Myers has gone through a transfor- mation, breaking the chains of a religious upbringing and hammering out throbbing notes from her bass guitar. Her album presents the conflict between her 'angelic' childhood and her adolescent frustration which birthed within the limitations of her parent's rule. Myers' vocals in particular ex- press this struggle with the use of euphoric, soft tones that build into sexy and powerful crescendos. The blurring of Myer's country heritage and her pursuit of a modern, met- ropolitan style is depicted perfectly in the lead single of the album, 'Tennessee'. The composition of banjo riffs complemented by heavy bass is the strangest, yet catchi- est song I have ever heard. (Also, it takes the piss out of hipsters which is a big plus). The appropriately named Daughter in the Choir EP is a great blend of indie-pop with frequent bursts of attitude from hottie who owns both a classical piano and rocking bass guitar. This is definitely an artist that you need to have on your iPod. Visit Meg Myers' official website: http:// meginthedark.com/ to download her debut EP Daughter in the Choir for free.
