14 ✦ BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED 2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW UNDER THE DOME Upon joining the ACC in 2013 as a full-time member in most of its Olympic sports and as a partial mem- ber in football, the university and its new league worked together to play four to six ACC football games in the 12-year period from 2014-25. This spring, another 12 years from 2026-37 were tacked on with a more uniform balance of five games each season. The 60 additional games ver- sus the ACC will have 30 at home and 30 on the road. Also included in the new 12-year slate will be two Labor Day Monday night road contests: Aug. 30, 2031, at Clemson and Sept. 1, 2036, at Vir- ginia Tech. One change that already was made last fall was Notre Dame's originally scheduled game at Bobby Dodd Sta- dium in Atlanta versus Georgia Tech on Oct. 19, 2019. It was switched to Nov. 14, 2020 because it was con- sidered mutually beneficial to both schools. From Notre Dame's perspective, it already was scheduled for a trip to Georgia on Sept. 21, 2019. A second trip to the Peach State a month later was not an ideal balance for a na- tional schedule. With the change, the Irish can make trips to the state of Georgia in consecutive years to keep a recruiting presence there. Also, Notre Dame always prefers to keep mid-October open for fall semester break, allowing the football players to decompress and even go back home for a few days. Finally, had that game been played in Atlanta on Oct. 19, 2019, it would have come between a home game versus USC (Oct. 12) and a trip to Michigan (Oct. 26). Having a bye Sat- urday in between rather than playing another game on the road makes the month a little less arduous. Much more can change between now and then — who could have predicted a few years ago that Mary- land, Rutgers and Nebraska would be in the Big Ten, or Missouri in the SEC, etc. — but one can't say plan- ning ahead with the schedules hasn't been accomplished.
