Last Saturday Lower Beverley Lake Park's long history was remembered with a 50th anniversary celebration at the park's pavilion which brought together former staff and management. The Township of Bas- tard and South Burgess purchased the camp- ground from Bill and Beth Buriga who developed the camping as an extension of a group of cottages they purchased from Warren Henderson. Camping was just start- ing to become popular and at the back of the property was a pasture. "Bill cleared all the sites out by hand. Every- body loved coming here. We had more Americans than Canadians," said Beth Buriga. Park management chair Cathy Livingstone had her own memories of the park from growing up in Delta and remembered the plant- ing of the maple trees along the road way com- ing into the park back in 1967. The park was a centen- nial project for the munic- ipality as well as a means of economic development. The township added to the original park the Burigas had created with an 85- acre parcel from Warren Henderson. Dredging of Mill Creek created fill to level the new parcel which was largely funded by provin- cial grants. Year over year improvements were made to increase the number of campsites and improve services. Management became the responsibility of the newly amalgamated Township of Rideau Lakes in 1998. In 2002 the man- agement of the park returned to a management board of municipal coun- cilors and community rep- resentatives. Over the years the park has realized the goal of the municipal leaders in 1967 and been of economic ben- efit to the community in its development of the tourist sector. "It's a real asset to our community and will be for years to come. We are dri- ving people in here who have never been here before," said Rideau Lakes Mayor Ron Hol- man. Park Manager William Morris used the occasion to recognize two corporate contributions to the park this year which included funding from the TD Foundation for an improved nature trail. A grant from Hydro One added playground equipment. The event brought together a number of peo- ple associated with the park over the years includ- ing the Burigas, Muriel Jones, an original member of the park board in 1967; Bud Donald, manager from 1973-1994 and his wife Pat; Howard French, former Reeve and Shirley Bryden, former Clerk Treasurer of Bastard and South Burgess.
