IU's first-year coaches are just 2-18-4 all-time against Purdue. 12 2017 Opponent Preview A fter back-to-back bowl appearances — a feat not accomplished at Indiana since 1990-91 — Kevin Wilson got fired and defen- sive coordinator Tom Allen slid into the head coach spot, a cos- mic shift in terms of personality and approach. Wilson was an offensive-minded coach and a high-octane gambler with a gruff demeanor. Allen is a defensive-minded coach who cares about the program's cul- ture, going as far as spouting a mantra of "love each other." "Allen seems to think that's what the program has been lacking, team unity, and he's going to either make it work or go down swinging," said Sam Beishuizen of TheHoosier.com, the Rivals site that covers IU. There will need to be more than an attitude adjustment for the Hoosiers to return to bowl eligibility. At least on defense, there won't be significant changes. Allen still is the coordinator and the play-caller, and there are enough key pieces back on that unit to expect IU to continue to improve under Allen's guidance. The Hoosiers allowed 10 fewer points per game in 2016 than in 2015, and Tom Campbell Quarterback Richard Lagow leads a Hoosier offense that will have to be up to speed early as it faces Ohio State in its season opener on the Thursday before Labor Day.
