That it managed to overcome the slate, which included five games vs. opponents ranked in the top eight nationally, to advance to the Big Ten Championship game, then beat Western Michigan in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, gives reason to believe the Badgers could be even better now. "I think the combination of returning talent from last year and an eas- ier schedule have raised expectations in Madison for 2017," said John Veldhuis, senior writer at BadgerBlitz.com, the Rivals site that covers Wisconsin. "Returning a lot of offensive talent is a big part of that. They lose a co-starter at quarterback, but Paul Chryst is getting the pieces in place to build up one of his trademark offenses." If that offense is to take a step forward, however, it'll have to answer questions at several key skill positions, namely quarterback and running back. At the former, sophomore Alex Hornibrook takes over as the full- time signal-caller after he split snaps with senior Bart Houston in 2016. Hornibrook, a lefty, was a bit scattered last season, completing 59 per- cent of his passes with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. He'll need to be more consistent, but there are signs he's moving that direc- tion. And having tight end Troy Fumagalli as a solid safety valve certainly helps. "He had his good moments and his freshman moments," Veldhu- is said of Hornibrook's debut season. "But the coaching staff was im- pressed with the steps forward he took during the season, and he got Wisconsin Sophomore Alex Hornibrook hopes his strong left arm will be able to effectively and consistently lead the Badger offense in 2017.
