GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 6 5
Starting quarterback David Blough is known for flashy card tricks — he'll perform them
on anyone who asks, and most of his teammates don't like to be victims anymore — and
aptitude as an impressive Spades player. But no matter which deck of the 30-plus he has to
choose to display a sleight of hand, he's always drawn to one particular card: The King of
Spades. According to Blough, early card-makers drew their kings to represent real ones. One
early design reportedly had a full-bodied King of Spades with a slingshot at his feet. That'd
make him King David, who slayed Goliath and whom Blough is named after.
