GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 6 9 5 David Steinmetz: A grad- uate transfer from FCS Rhode Island, Steinmetz was brought in to compete for a starting job at offensive tackle. But very little is known about the 6-foot-8, 300-pounder. Is he good enough to make the leap from lower-division football to the big leagues? We'll see. 4 Josh Okonye: Okonye certainly has the chops to play in the Big Ten, after the defensive back was a key piece to Wake Forest's secondary the last couple seasons. He's likely to start as a cornerback at Purdue, but has safety and nickel back experience. It'll be interesting to see not only where he lands, but how the secondary shakes out. 3 Matt McCann: The former start- ing right tackle was out during the spring following right ankle surgery, allowing Eric Swingler to get the No. 1 repetitions at his position. McCann, a sophomore, is likely to compete for a starting spot again this season, but where? Maybe he slides in at right guard. 2 Isaac Zico: Purdue needs instant-impact receiv- ers; nothing was more clear following a spring that saw only one — Gregory Phillips — emerge as a candidate. Jeff Brohm spent the offseason trying to solidify the position, including J.C. transfer Zico. The outside receiver has been on campus since May, giving him a jump on learning the playbook. 1 Markell Jones: Will the real Jones, and we're assuming that's the dynamic running back of 2015, stand up? Or not? If not, then the junior's time as Purdue's RB1 might be over. There's too much quality competi- tion for carries to wait for Jones to mature into the back that so many thought he'd be only two years ago. — Kyle Charters T O P Players To Watch In Training Camp Photos by Tom Campbell (Jones, McCann); Union-Recorder (Zico); Wake Forest (Okonye); Rhode Island (Steinmetz); Michigan (Harbaugh); Scott Walstrom, NIU photography (Evans); Purdue (Mollenkopf); Tom Campbell (Yancey); Boiler Index By The Numbers 3 5 8,000 20 Purdue opponents ranked in the top 25 in Athlon's preseason college football preview: Michigan (10), Wisconsin (12) and Louisville (18).
