"The new recruiting rules has been a windfall for Ne- braska," DiNardo said. "It is going to take maybe two or three years to manifest itself. Nebraska is a school, not only in the Big Ten, but in the country, that has benefited most from this legislation. Because if you are going to try to live up to Nebraska's reputation and historic past, which is conference and national championships, something had to change in recruiting. Legendary Nebraska coaches Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney were great recruiters." Back in Osborn's and Devaney's days, a prospect al- ways visited officially before making a decision. That hasn't been true for the last much of the past 10 years. "Kids are making decisions based on unofficial visits paid by themselves, and who the hell can make their own way to Lincoln, Nebraska?" DiNardo said. "Not only that, but you will be able to pay for families as well. So when you identify the ones that are open to something differ- ent, and you are allowed to fly their families to campus, and that family gets off the plane and looks at Lincoln, Neb., as a drastically different environment than they are used to and they say, 'My son can come here and be safe?'
