The Wolverines are just 3-3 in their six trips to West Lafayette in the last 21 years. 4 2017 Opponent Preview I f Michigan wants to repeat its consecutive 10-win seasons, and give itself a chance at advancing to the playoffs, it's going to need to find a way to replace a massive amount of talent. The Wolverines had a program-record 11 players selected in April's NFL Draft, including nine in the first four rounds. Yet, this is Michigan, and the goal, especially under third-year coach Jim Harbaugh, is the same: Win the Big Ten and go the College Football Playoffs. That won't be easy in a division with Ohio State and Penn State, though. "Jim Harbaugh isn't the type to concede anything, however, and there's a lot of good, young talent on this team," said Chris Balas, who covers Michigan for TheWolverine.com on the Rivals Network. "Com- peting for the Big Ten, and thus a playoff spot, will now be the expec- tation every year." But Michigan has a lot to replace, including key pieces from a de- fense that was dominant at times last season, when it allowed only 14.1 points per game, second in the country. But safety Jabrill Peppers, the 25th overall pick in the draft, and the rest of the secondary will need replaced, as will three-fourths of the defensive line. The latter might be easier to do, considering Michigan still has fifth- year senior Maurice Hurst, whom Pro Football Focus calls the country's UM Photography Maurice Hurst is rated as one of the best pass rushers in the nation from his defensive tackle position. The Wolverines have to re-load its defense in 2017, a key to their success. Early Homecoming Sept. 23 is the earliest Homecoming date in school history, happening on this date for the third time (Minnesota 2000, 2006).
