Hayes, MD, FACP, FASCO 2016-2017 ASCO President I n 1959, when I was 8 years old, my cousin, Kim Yarling, became ill. I was told he had been diagnosed with something called leukemia. I had no idea what that was, but nearly 60 years later, I still remember the haunt- ing vision of Kim watching us from the window of his room at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis as we walked to our car. He passed away the next week. Fast forward nearly 20 years: In 1978, when I was a third-year medical stu- dent in Indianapolis, my wife, Jane, and I had dinner with one of her cowork- ers and her husband, Judy and John FEATURES 28ā€‚Iā€‚07.2017
