AUGUST 2017 THE WOLVERINE 39 Ohio State won The Wolverine's Big Ten All-Sports Championship in 2016-17, beating out rival Michigan by just 1.5 points. The Buckeyes claimed shares of regular-season titles in football, women's basketball and tennis, while winning the men's tennis title outright. Ohio State also impressively grabbed five tournament titles — men's gymnastics, men's and women's tennis, wrestling and rowing — which tied Penn State to lead the league. The Buckeyes nearly added two more tournament titles to their résumé in men's swimming and diving and men's outdoor track and field, but finished tied for second in the former and second outright in the latter. Ohio State's 102.5 points led all of men's sports, while its 119 points in women's sports finished second only to Michigan's 133. — Austin Fox 2016-17 Big Ten Men's Sports Finishes School BSB BKB CC FB GLF GYM HKY SOC SD TEN ITF OTF WRS PTS Ohio State 11 T10 8 T1 3 1* 3 T6 T2 1* T7 2 3* 102.5 Wisconsin — T2 1* T3 7 — 2 3 5 T4 3 4 T8 96 Minnesota 3 4 4 T7 10 3 1 — 4 T7 5 7 7 90 Penn State 13 T12 9 T1* T4 4 4* 5 7 T7 2 1* 1 90 Michigan 2 T5* 5 T3 9 7 5 8 T2 2 T7 T8 T8 87 Indiana 6 T10 3 9 11 — — 2 1* 9 1* T8 T11 75.5 Iowa T4* T5 12 T5 T4 6 — — 8 10 6 5 2 74 Illinois 10 9 6 11 1* 2 — — — 3 9 6 T4 72.5 Nebraska 1 T12 10 T5 12 5 — — — 11 4 3 T4 65.5 Purdue 8 1 7 T12 T4 — — — 6 T4 10 10 10 62.5 Northwestern 7 T5 — T7 2 — — T6 9 T4 — — T11 51.5 Maryland T4 T2 — 10 8 — — 1* — — — 13 14 45 Michigan State 9 T5 2 T12 T13 — 6 4 10 12 11 11 13 43.5 Rutgers 12 14 11 14 T13 — — 9 — — 12 12 T4 21 2016-17 Big Ten Women's Sports Finishes School BKB CC FH GLF GYM ROW SOC SFB SD TEN ITF OTF VBL PTS Michigan 3 1* T3 5 T1* 2 T4 2 1* T1 7 5 6 133 Ohio State T1 5 9 3 5 1* T8 3 5 T1* 3 4 T7 119 Minnesota 10 4 — 8 T6 7 T1* 1* 4 T7 4 2 T2 106 Penn State T6 2 2* 11 T6 — T1 12 8 11 1* 3 4 97.5 Wisconsin T11 6 — 4 — 3 T4 6 3 14 6 9 T2 85.5 Michigan State T6 3 T6 1* T8 6 T10 7 13 T4 11 10 5 82.5 Purdue T4 7 — 6 — — 12 T9 6 13 2 1* 10 74 Nebraska T11 13 — 12 T1 — T6 5 10 T7 8 6 1 74 Indiana T4 8 T6 13 — T4 T8 T9 2 10 5 8 11 73.5 Northwestern T8 9 T3 2 — — T1 8 7 3 — — 13 72.5 Iowa T8 11 5 10 3 T4 13 T9 11 T7 10 7 9 65 Illinois T11 10 — 7 4 — T10 4 12 T4 12 12 T7 61 Maryland T1* 12 1 9 T8 — 14 14 — T4 9 11 12 55.5 Rutgers T11 14 8 14 T8 8 T6 13 9 12 — 13 14 31.5 * Denotes Big Ten Tournament champions Note: There are no regular-season titles for cross country, golf, men's gymnastics, row- ing, swimming and div- ing, or track and field; and there is not a Big Ten Tournament for vol- leyball. Big Ten, tying for U-M's second- best finish ever. They wound up 20-1 at home, with a full expectation of getting invited to the NCAA Tournament. When that didn't happen, they took what they had and did the most they could. The Wolverines reeled off six straight victories in the WNIT, becoming champions in Detroit's Calihan Hall with a thriller of an 89-79 win in triple overtime in the title game over Georgia Tech. Katelynn Flaherty, the WNIT Most Valuable Player, connected on a pair of three-pointers in the final 1:07 just to send the game to overtime. She wound up with 27 points in Michigan's tournament- clinching effort. The postseason tournament vic- tory represented the first in the history of the program, which be- gan in 1973-74. Barnes Arico saw it as a major step for the Wolverines. Flaherty, meanwhile, referenced the NCAA snub. "We proved that we should have been in there," she said. "This tournament really made us come together and definitely prepared us for next year. … I think it's a big accomplishment." ❏ Ohio State Narrowly Edges Out Michigan As Big Ten All-Sports Champion For 2016-17 2016-17 BIG TEN ALL-SPORTS STANDINGS Reg.
