But he isn't ready to give up his NBA dream just yet, even if he does have other career paths avail- able to him. The 6-5 shooting guard also ex- celled as a right-handed pitcher at Notre Dame and was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. In his lone pro season at the short-season Class A level, Connaughton impressed in six outings. He was 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA and struck out 10 batters in 14 2 ⁄3 innings, showing the kind of stuff that could get him to Baltimore in short order. "He's a terrific athlete, has a world of talent. A good competitor," Ori- oles executive vice president Dan Duquette, who has stayed in touch with Connaughton via text messages, told OregonLive.com. "So whenever he wants to apply his skills full-time, I think he can come quick — to the major leagues — because he's such a gifted athlete." For now, though, Connaughton is focused on making an impact on the hardwood. With his opportunities limited during the regular season, he chose to play for the Blazers' entry in the NBA Summer League at Las Vegas. "You've got to look at it both ways," Connaughton told Oregon- Live.com. "I've always had a drive to be successful. I've always wanted and always dreamed of having an impact in the NBA. "Everyone always assumed that, for me, baseball was going to be the route that I went and I was going to be very successful in it. And I think maybe someday that will be the case. But I'm to the point in my life now where I want to give this a real, real shot before I sit down and look at my options and take anything else into consideration." Connaughton served as Portland's starting shooting guard before suf- fering a strained left hamstring in the team's third summer league game July 11. He tallied seven points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal in 11 minutes prior to exiting the con- test. In the three contests he played in, he averaged 6.0 points, 4.3 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 steal in 24.3 minutes per outing.
