10 AUGUST 2017 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME Numbers Game Three transfers and the 21-man freshman class have all been issued jersey numbers for the 2017 season, and two other number changes were made. A few more changes could occur prior to or after the start of preseason training camp Aug. 1 at the Culver Academies, but for now here is what Notre Dame released this summer: • Sophomore cornerback Donte Vaughn is No. 8 after donning No. 35 last season. • Senior nose tackle Daniel Cage is No. 90 after wearing No. 75 his first three seasons. • Graduate transfer wide receiver Freddy Canteen, from the University of Michigan, will wear No. 11. Be- cause he graduated as a junior, Canteen actually will have two years of eligibility remaining. • Former Naval Academy starting safety and current sophomore Alohi Gilman is No. 12 — the number of tackles he made, a career high, in the 28-27 victory by the Midshipmen last year versus Notre Dame. He had worn No. 1 at Navy. He is projected to sit out this year due to NCAA undergraduate transfer rules. • Graduate transfer wide receiver Cameron Smith, from Arizona State University, will wear No. 16. Unlike Can- teen, 2017 is his final season of eligibility. Five early enrollee freshmen already had their num- bers issued this spring, while 16 others were assigned as follows: QB Avery Davis — 13 RB C.J. Holmes — 15 WR Jafar Armstrong — 25 WR Michael Young — 87 TE Cole Kmet — 84 TE Brock Wright — 89 OL Aaron Banks — 69 OL Robert Hainsey — 72 OL Josh Lugg — 75 OL Dillan Gibbons — 76 DT Kurt Hinish — 41 DE Kofi Wardlow — 47 DE Jonathan MacCollister — 92 DT Darnell Ewell — 94 DE Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa — 95 LB David Adams — 35 LB Drew White — 40 ROV Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah — 30 S Jordan Genmark Heath — 13 S Isaiah Robertson — 17 K/P Jonathan Doerer — 39 Sophomore cornerback Donte Vaughn is now wearing No. 8 after donning No. 35 last season. PHOTO BY COREY BODDEN For the first time, Notre Dame and Arkansas will meet on the football field after having agreed to a home- and-home series. The Fighting Irish will host the Razorbacks at Notre Dame Stadium on Sept. 12, 2020. They will then travel to Fayetteville for a game in Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Sta- dium on Oct. 4, 2025. Notre Dame vice president/di- rector of athletics Jack Swarbrick has prioritized getting more South- eastern Conference opponents on the schedule. The Razorbacks are the most recent addition, joining Georgia (2017 at home and 2019 in Athens, Ga.), a home contest versus Vanderbilt in 2018, and a home-and- home with Texas A&M in 2024-25. In fact, the Irish are slated to play Texas A&M at home (Sept. 27) and at Arkansas (Oct. 4) on consecutive weekends in 2025. Until this year 's Sept. 9 show- down with Georgia, Notre Dame had not faced an SEC team in the regular season since a home-and- home versus Tennessee in 2004-05. "Whenever we have an opponent come to Notre Dame Stadium for the first time, there's another layer of interest in the game," Swarbrick said in a statement released by Notre Dame. "The same is true for our pro- gram and fans when we play away from home at a first-time venue. That is especially likely to be true of these games given the quality and tradition of the two programs." "This two-game series will provide our program with another opportu- nity to play a top-caliber foe from the Southeastern Conference," Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said in a release regarding the matchup. "Coach [Bret] Bielema is a tremen- dous coach and his teams have al- ways played a physical style of foot- ball. I know our team and fans will be excited to play the Razorbacks." The one main previous connec- tion between the two schools is head coach Lou Holtz, who coached the Razorbacks from 1977-83 prior to his 11-year stint (1986-96) at Notre Dame.
