Next week the trucks will be rolling for con- struction to begin on the Village of Westport's new subsurface sewage dis- posal system off Cty. Rd. 10. The new system, effec- tively a scaled up septic system, will need 3,000 truckloads of sand to be hauled from a pit near Seeley's Bay. The contractors esti- mate there will be one truck arriving at the con- struction site every seven minutes, Infrastructure Manager Max Christie told council on Monday, ahead of a meeting with the contractor on Tues- day. Plans have been made to create a second road to the site, south of the existing road to give haulers a one way tour through the site. Hauling of sand is set to begin Monday on the road to be constructed this week. On Monday council approved taking a con- struction loan from RBC for up to $3,000,000 at a rate of RBC prime minus 0.75. The loan will be pay- ing for the construction tender of $2,372,690 and the second half of the $1.2 million of sand which will soon be travel- ling through North Leeds up Hwy. 15 and across Cty. Rd. 42. The first half of the filter sand was paid for as part of a $1.9 mil- lion Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund grant announced in December 2014. A successful grant application for another $1.9 million Ontario Community Infrastruc- ture Fund grant to be announced around Janu- ary 2018 could put a large dent in the new $3,000,000 loan. A total of 8355 boats locked through in June across the system, up from 7594 last June, but they still have some catching up to do. High water and the late start saw May numbers drop to 309, down from 2486 in May 2016. While the number of vessels at the Narrows decreased by 20 boats to 746 in June this year, traf- fic between Newboro and Jones Falls increased from 684 to 724 at Newboro, 466 to 574 at Chaffeys, 392 to 516 at Davis and from 219 to 241 at Jones Falls. Numbers also increased at Bevridges from 49 in 2016 to 134 this season. Overall traffic along the canal dropped by 87.6 per cent in May. For the season, overall numbers were at 8,355 ves- sels to June 30, down 15 per cent from 10,085 to the end of June 2016. That southern section of the canal is down 18 per cent for the season but the early traffic pale in com- parison to July, so numbers can recover quickly. This year's free lockage may have drawn more cot- tagers onto the water for local trips with Parks Canada hoping for a 30 per cent increase in traffic for Canada's 150th. The second annual Bryan Burtch Memorial Benefit Dance takes place Saturday July 29, starting at 6 p.m. at the Elgin Lions Hall. The dance was institut- ed last year by Burtch's family after he lost a battle with pancreatic cancer. The purpose for the event was to raise both money and awareness for this type of cancer. Only eight per cent of patients diag- nosed with pancreatic can- cer are still alive after five years. Despite having surgery and receiving chemotherapy, Burtch lived seven months from the time of his diagnosis. Burtch's family raised $4,000 at the inaugural dance last year. The family has also sold over $5000 in pansies which was donated to pan- creatic cancer research. This year, the family has opted to donate the funds to the "Park it With Parker" campaign. Parker Simpson, 8, son of Sarah and Devin Simpson of Seeley's Bay, lost his bat- tle to cancer this past Feb- ruary. South Crosby Public School, where Parker attended, is raising funds to build a space to honour Parker's memory. Anyone interested in attending the dinner and dance can find informa- tion on the Facebook Page, 2nd Annual Bryan Burtch Memorial Dance or email aswhalen@bell.net for details. Any and all donations, no matter the amount, will be greatly appreciated.
